Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)

What it's approved for

Where it stands: FDA-approved (green).

Tirzepatide is a weekly shot that acts on two gut-hormone receptors at once: GLP-1, like semaglutide, and a second one called GIP 5. Together they lower appetite and help control blood sugar 5.

Mounjaro treats type 2 diabetes. Zepbound is approved for long-term weight management and for obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity 5.

How strong is the evidence?

Very strong. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial of adults with obesity, people on tirzepatide lost about 15% to 21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, depending on the dose, compared with about 3% on placebo 56.

The honest takeaway

Like semaglutide, it works well and has real side effects. Stomach and gut problems are the most common, and the label carries the same kind of thyroid tumor warning 5. Scientists are still working out how much the GIP part adds 5.
