Lab science of handling · Part 4: Units vs. mL

Decimals, abbreviations and the thousandfold slip

Lesson 8.4.3 · 5 min read · Professional plan

What you'll learn

  • 1 mg is 1,000 mcg, so confusing them is a thousandfold error. ISMP recommends "mcg," not "µg".
  • Trailing zeros ("1.0") and naked decimals (".5") can each cause tenfold errors.
  • "U," "IU" and "cc" are on ISMP's error-prone list. Write "units" and "mL" instead.
  • Safety rules in regulated pharmacy target the exact points where numbers get misread.
